Strange Brew...

This new Knife mix is great for running/PUMPING IRON. It really sounds like a set you would have heard from Knife at Shake em Down in the old Milky Way Lounge (RIP).

When he's not DJing, Knife is busy at Goodlife keeping the working DJs of Boston employed, as well as booking out-of-towners like Scottie B, Eleven, Stretch, Assault, and Prince Paul... Good work bud. What he's not doing is posting on his ol' blog (c'mon). Thankfully Sleazy Trees is keeping the laugh quotient high OVER THERE. That's what i say, heres what Knife says...

"Hey y'all! Here's a live mix of some old and new tracks I'm feeling
right now. Special shout out to Will C from Traffic for mastering this
bad larry. Please visit www.djknife.com when you get a chance. Thanks
for taking a listen and enjoy responsibly kids!"

Gonzo's Baltimoreux

"For cookout time...make it Live at home # 29 time"

Great man, and no stranger to a great cookout, (wether its at his house or the family Devlin's) Adam Gonzo brings the dog-day delivery with his Live at Home.

Hey Guys,
This mix is all about peaks and valleys, strikes and gutters. Because, you know, sometimes you eat the bar, and, well, sometimes it eats you. I tried to put a little bit of something for everyone in this one-- 80's divorce rock, dream pop, cosmic disco, and, of course, Michael Jackson. I wanted to give this a summertime vibe, perfect for BBQs and trips to the beach. I hope the kids dig it. Anyway, I am super honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the fully fitted live at home mix series; the roster of DJs who have contributed so far is amazing.

I am currently working on my dissertation for a PhD in political theory at Johns Hopkins University. The dissertation is (tentatively) titled Race and Vision: Rethinking the Tragic, and it engages a number of intellectual traditions and thinkers, including Sophocles, Nietzsche, Frantz Fanon, Cornel West, C. L. R. James, Immanuel Kant, Johann Herder, Gilles Deleuze, W. E. B. Du Bois, and some other folks as well. I am also teaching an undergrad seminar in the fall titled "Black Political Thought and the Enlightenment" that I am really excited about. Hopefully one day I can change my DJ name to 'Dr. Adam Gonzo'.

All the best from balmy Baltimore,
Adam Gonzo

Live @ Home part 28 ... Simon Phoenix

This mix is just in time for all your summer trips. It's a really nice mix of oddities and obscurities. Suitable for: a nice afternoon, a window down drive, or the morning after a long morning.

Simon:
"Most people know me as the dj/promoter guy from Tax Lo, but during the work week in addition to all the Tax Lo stuff, I'm the manager of Wayside Music, a music mailorder and distributor that specializes in avant, experimental, off-beat, progressive and rehearsal intensive rock, jazz and contemporary music, (the ever so popular) Krautrock, the Nurse With Wound list, space rock, fusion, psych, and plenty of undefinable musics from across the globe. I've been doing this for 11 years now, so most of these tracks were ones I discovered at work. This is by no means an overview of what we do, just a short mix of some stuff I've been feeling lately. Unlike the stuff I play at Tax Lo, there is no dance music on this mix"

note: Simon Djs regularly at Tax Lo (big party) in Baltimore....I could go on about Tax Lo and Simon and Cullen's contributions to Baltimore nightlyfe and youth culture.. but that would bore. They have done a pretty swell job over the years of keeping it fresh and moving forward. Big shouts to Chris O, Dan, and Mikey Mayhem and all the art school girls of Tax Lo, from Good Love to Sonar.

Live at Home pt 26 - Dj Ayres

Oh man, here it is! I have been bugging everyone in The Rub for some time now to do one of these and now we have two under our belts. Eleven got us a few months back and now Ayres really came through with some funky tunes for you. Here are some words from the man himself.

Like everything, I really over-thought this mix. When I started making mixtapes in the 90s, I would pull all the records I wanted to use, practice each mix and chart out the flow of the whole thing on paper, including what tempo each record needed to be on the pitch control to mix with the next one. I would do a dry run to see how long the mix was going to be and add or take out some records, then finally hit record on my cassette recorder and hope to nail it on the third or fourth take. These days I do most of my mixes in Ableton, cutting and pasting in tracks, editing the intros and outros to mix perfectly, which takes out any room for human error. It's a hell of lot faster this way, so doing a Live At Home was a return to the old way of doing things, and while working with Serato and a Pioneer 800 does make things a little easier than 12" records and the shitty Numark mixer I had in '96, recording live still means taking that leap of faith when you hit record. I felt pretty happy with the second take so that is the one you'll hear. In terms of selection, these are all songs I don't usually get to play in primetime DJ sets, but I wanted it to still feel like a party. Some funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and a little bit of house at the end. I hope yall enjoy it.

Live at Home pt 25 - Jayceeoh

So let's kick off the new year right with Live at Home pt 25 from our dude, Jayceeoh! This mix is a nice refreshing start for 2010. Super soulful and skillfully done. Here are some words from the man himself.

A few weeks ago the Fully Fitted homies hit me up and asked if I would be down to record a mix for the Live at Home series. I had been a familiar with the series but not up to date on all of the releases. I checked it out and a bunch of my favorite DJs had already thrown down, so I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of. When I asked what type of mix I should do the instructions were what "play what you would want to listen to on a sunday afternoon at your crib." I was feeling that vibe. I have been putting out alot of mixes recently but more on the upbeat tip in the interest of booking gigs and what not. I was pumped to throw down some classy tunes to chill out to. I didnt do my usualy style with lots of cuts and quick mixing. I let this mix breathe and am very happy with the outcome. Enjoy! - jayceeoh

Live At Home #24 Pase Rock

wazzzaaap. I haven't posted on this thing in ages. So this afternoon I did a Live At Home mix. just fartin around on the turntables procrastinating on cleaning up the crib. These are some of my favorite jams. I let the songs play out and some of the mixes are sloppy and one of my serato records had a scratch in it so it was skipping on some songs but that's all in the spirit of Live at Home right? I reaaaaalllly wanted to go in on the early 90's R&B but I spared you after a few choice cuts... oh yeah and there's some new Pase exclusive world premiere jams on there... actually just one from me, and then some other randomness... bump it late night, early in the morning... in your hooptie or your big body Benz. It's all to the good.

Live @ Home part 23... Dr. Ruddz

I met Ruddz in Monterrey, Mexico when Darko and I got invited down there to DJ. We played at this crazy Art festival in an old foundry that ended with a performance of fire breathing metal sculptures and dancing/repelling costumed creatures.... We also met Luis on this trip who, on a drunken whim after our DJ night, said he was gonna go to Europe with us to hang out and party (we were leaving the following day) . He wasn't joking, and was in the lobby at 8 am the next morning drinking espresso. You would think this would be creepy but it turned out to be an great example of "One More Daying it". Pretty amazing and hilarious time...but I digress.

Dr. Ruddz always sends me awesome Cumbias and weird edits from the deep south, so I asked him to do a mix...He sent over this nice mix and a couple exclusive tracks as well. Gracias guey!!!

Ruddz:

"we have a funky situation going on and Its not very hard to notice that there's a beautiful woman involved into it. Yes yes yes this mixtape was made strictly for those cute ladies who inspires us to spin groovy sets for hours just to keep them moving from side-2-side over the dancefloor (or at those private overnights pj parties @home). Party Disco Jamz. It's a blend including all kinds of picks i've been listening last few weeks, some of them i never have a chance to play at regular gigs, some of them are always in the bag, some of them are old, some of them are new, some are made by friends & some are made also by me. Hope you like it.

Funny thing is that the session was also sort of experiment, came out with a solution to record live tracked sets using the rane serato box and your home studio I/O interfase. Just need 4 x RCA mono "Y"-kind of extension cables to split every Serato output into 2 independent mono outputs. Every Left/RIght LINE output of the Serato should connect one end to the djmixer and the other end goes directly to the I/O interfase in two separated channels @Logic. You can use also third channel to record the session mix as it. Totally Live at home... It works fine!"

Live @ Home 22: Joe T

Joe T (formerly known as DJ ComaToast) and I went Art school together back in the early 00's. We would hang out and talk about graffiti and records and occasionally DJ together. It was a great time to be DJing, everyone was really down to just dance and it was before every city had some sort of internet dance scene, so the wide range of records being played at parties like Taxadermy Lodge didn't seem forced, it was just good music for dancing (not a novel idea i know).

Joe T and Joe Hoyt had an occasional residence at TaxLo and thats where I first heard him play. He played funk, disco, cool modern dance tracks and some shit that was a bit to far out (in a Nucleus kind of way) for the drunk chicks, but it was really cool. I asked him for a mix of songs he's been listening to lately and, lucky for you I, he sent this :

Count Down To Oblivion(live@home 22) - Joe T.

...on the Mix:

"This mix for me is a sampling of music to make art by. Its basically some rock stuff and some folky hippie tunes I enjoy lately in my studio. My tastes kind of change every couple of years, I still love the funk, soul, and Latin stuff, but right now this is where I'm at. Honestly, I've really been a bad record nerd lately. I currently reside in Chicago, but look back fondly on the freaky dj'ing and partying days in Baltimore. Thanks to Mr. Devlin for letting me share."

Joe also did the fresh artwork for the mix...MOre @ his BLOG

Dj Eleven Live @ Home pt 21

Wooo hoooooooooo! We finally got one of The Rub dudes on the roster of our Live @ Home series. Our good friend, Dj Eleven, surprised me with an email two weeks ago that I had kind of forgot about. Needless to say, he stuck to his word and sent over a far out mix.

Eleven, take it away....

"Yung Klassen asked me about doing a Live At Home mixes a gazillion months ago and I put the idea off 'cause, well... 1) I didn't know what to do. 2) I had so much else going on that I didn't know when I could get to it. 3) I hate having my turntables sitting on my kitchen counter. As I slowly chipped away at the other things on my to-do list, this one started looming larger & larger the more I tried to avoid sitting down to think about it. Then as I was about halfway through playing a different version of this set in the first hour of a party last week, it finally clicked: "How about a bunch of dance shit that I never get a chance to play. Yeah! That's it!" So, here I give you "A Bunch of Dance Shit I Never Get A Chance to Play", recorded live in Do Or Die Bed-Stuy on Monday, June 22nd, 2009."

For edition #20 it's Acid Test Djs ... Never met these guys, but I've been mining their blog for psych, oddities, and edits for some time . Check out Spirit Bear and Udagawa HERE.

Acid Test on the mix:
"Udagawa gets the party started with some dirty manchester rock/acid house vibrations, and Spiritbear rounds it out with some thunderous rock and roll edits.
Perfect for your next bbq, just add whiskey, coke, leather, freaky ladies, and biker beards."

Live @ Home part 19

For those just tuning in, our San Antonio brother JJ Lopez has been a regular on the Fully Fitted blog for some time now. I recently got the request from Mr Devlin to see if Ol' JJ would be interested in doing a Live @ Home mix, and here it is. Seems like we just keep getting deeper and deeper.

Here are some words from JJ...

"I could have done this mix an infinite number of ways. There is just too much great music from this period to capture in one mix. None the less, presented here are a few classics of the mid to late 1970s R&B and Jazz scene. The Mizell Brothers, Curtis Mayfield, Donald Byrd, and the current sounds of El Michels Affair are really the inspiration here. I've made a few popular stops. I have also included the local San Anto sounds of Jimmy Edwards and managed to squeeze in Pi-R-Square, "Fantasy" on Wee for the deep heads. I wanted to do a mix for everyone to enjoy all summer long. It's very much on the deep vibe and just perfect for a hot Texas day, enjoy."

Special Nigerian Disco Delivery/Live At Home

Very excited about this one... I contacted Frank from the always great Voodoofunk blog about doing a Live at Home mix. It turned out that he was on his way to Africa, but he had a mix for his new night "Lagos Disco Inferno" that needed a home...Needless to say, I extended our site.

I'll let Frank's words explain, but I highly recommend going to the blog and downloading the mixes there. Lots of heavy grooves and upliftment! Summertime soundtracks through and through.(this one has been in constant rotation in my headphones.)

Nigeria in the 70s had a recording industry that most foreigners cannot begin to comprehend.Hundreds of Funk and Disco bands recorded for big companies like EMI, Decca, Polydor, and an uncountable number of independent labels. Yet this incredibly vibrant scene remained ignored by everybody outside of West Africa. Until now: "Lagos Disco Inferno" is the only club night on earth devoted to spreading the power of Nigerian Disco music! It's time to face the heat and to fully submit ourselves to some of the heaviest grooves ever created by mankind. Lets get together and celebrate the heroes of a time and place beyond the things we know.
See you there,
-Frank

Live From the Royal Castle.

While in NY last week working on tunes and things, Ghostdad bought this :

Its an LaTec 100a record mixing console. Two belt driven turntables, rotary mixing knobs, a Tape IN and a Tape OUT. We started messing around with it, smaashing records into one another then decided to record a mix of these old Dancehall 45s AlexxxChange hAd sitting around.

There is no pitch control so you have to just drop tracks and rub your finger on the platter to make things mix. We used the MoogerFooger through the mic input and got some nice delay effects. It's not the newest rig so there is alot of bleed and wierd sound artifacts, but hopefully that adds to the charm.

Our homie from the left coast, (thee) Mike B came through big time with a super fresh Live @ Home take. Mike dropped the mother load of dancehall/ reggae chunes for us, which I think might be the first of its kind in the Live @ Home series. Here are words from the man himself to talk about dis ting...

Blurb:
Though this mix is called "Live At Home" it should really be called "Live At Steve 1Der's Home." My turntables aren't set up right now so he was kind enough to let me come over and record this.
I tried my best to make this mix as ticey as possible. I could go in to whole spiel about why this mix is all reggae, but that seems a bit aburrido, right?
Mike B say him love you.

This one is just in from A Silent Flute. This guy has been blogging about cool shit since way before i had a Laptop. Do your self a favor and go for a long walk or subway ride to this one...

Air Conditioned Theatre

"This is a score. The majority of scenes take place in Hell's Kitchen in the late '80s. A few scenes are set in the Trini populated area of Brooklyn. Scenes include driving around in a 1986 Saab, taking the G train, visiting porno stores and theaters. One character is French. A guy and a girl. Heavy dialog. They do drugs and space out. There are many shots of neon lights and people walking down the avenues. One scene involves a hand gun. In the movie the characters talk often of Duran Duran and Nile Rodgers, but their music does not appear in the score. There are also a couple sex scenes and the characters often order 'zombies' at the bars they visit. They walk across the Manhattan bridge. Subtitled. Mixed in one take."

My man Morse Code was one of the first dudes I thought of when I started to reach out to some of the homies for this year's Live at Home mixes. He is also the first of any of the guys I reached out to to come through and actually make (ahem, hope yall are reading this). As you can tell from the tracklist, this looks pretty official. Thats all from my end, here are some words from the man himself...

"I couldn't remember the last time I had set out to make a mix without some type of theme or concept that I thought would appeal to people and just mixed a buncha songs I like. So while relishing that opportunity, I made a lil crate of some midtempo songs I really like at the moment and then hit record and got into it. This was a lot of fun to make, hope u enjoy it!"

Live @ Home part 14

It's been almost a year exactly since Live@home jumped off and its great to have Chico Sonido here for the birthday party. I asked for a Live@Home mix and he obliged. Lucky for us. This mix is the shit.

On the Mix:
" 'paisadelic' is the word i like to use to describe the sound of my first album wich is a mix between the words "paisa" (that comes from "paisano" that is the term mexicans use to call the one from their own country, in LA this word is used by cholos to refer to mexicans) , and the word 'psychedelic'. "

Mix is released here and over at 8106....they post cool videos and good MP3s...visual game, also tight.

A few things about Chico Sonido : He is from Mexico and is currently living in LA. He did that awesome cumbia refix of Rye Rye's Shake it To The Ground last year. He apparently has an awesome record collection. He is set to release an album sometime real soon. Check out his tracks and mixes here.
