Fall Music For Cloudplum 3

Hello friends. The time has come and gone... kind of, for my annual Fall Music For Cloudplum mixtape. This marks the 3rd year in a row I have made a tape for my friends at Cloudplum and to share with you all.

The concept behind the mix series is based on music that reminds me of the Fall season. I would have to say the Fall is my favorite time of year no matter where I live, and my musical tastes tends to reflect that.

This year's mix is dedicated to Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse. He passed this Spring and the music world lost another genius.

So without further ado, here is FALL MUSIC FOR CLOUDPLUM 3!!!

Prince Klassen - Fall Music For Cloudplum 3

Christmas in Capetown

I always like to contemplate this Newman tune after the Christmas lights have dimmed. Sure its a bit schmaltzy but this one always gets to me for some reason. Maybe it's the slamming changes, incidentally loose inspiration for the DX7 chords in this number:

Album Teasers pt. 1

To follow up Chris's post here's the latest "teaser" for the upcoming Win Win full length. They're giving me alota credit but there are some animations from Alex and Chris in here as well. Klassen also helped us shoot the title animations in the first teaser and is behind the fisheye lense in the second. Here are the other two:

Thanks to everyone for the warm response on these. Doing videos is part of how I started working on music with these guys and now we're all sort of doing both which has been a lot of fun. Expect more music AND video output from us in the near future.

new video.

in case you haven't been by in a few...

This is a new video/commercial/video/thing by Ghostdad for ‘ReleaseRPM’ … The song is the lead single from our (WIN WIN) record due out in FEB. on Vice. It features Lizzie Bougatsos of the grupo Gang Gang Dance. The vocals where originally recorded for another song on the record. Its a pretty heavy dance song called ‘Not Too Late’ with a vocal sample and a SICK Casio SK-1 dog yelp. After trying to get the vocals to fit without much luck, we went back to the drawing board and figured out some new parts, and in turn a new song. ’Release RPM’ is the result.

PS: Father Ghost is about to release the next installment of his video "ads" for the record in the next few days. He will post it here first. The music for that one is a real nice album cut worked out exclusively by xxxchange. Stay tuned...

Turntable Lab Radio: Prince Klassen

The Lab put the post up late last night, and the show aired on Thursday morning pretty late or early depending on what kind of person you are. Either way I am so happy to have done this mix for them.

There are a lot of exclusives on the mix, as well as new tunes from mostly homies that I am really feeling.

You can expect a lot of percussive / jackin' / deep House tunes.

SEE YOU THERE!!!!

This weekend with Prince Klassen

Yo,

East Coast folks can catch me playing a couple of different times, if at all interested. I am pretty excited about all these gigs too, so looking forward to seeing some friends out.

First on Friday I will be DJing with two homies, Michna of Ghostly International fame + Them Jeans of Dim Mak fame. The party will be at The Cove in Williamsburg and should be a blast. Also down the street at Public Assembly Natalie Storm will be headlining Flashing Lights, so kill two birds and hop around.

Then on Saturday I will be heading to Philly to play alongside Dj Apt one of The Philadelphyinz. I have heard nothing about their parties in Philly and am so glad to be able to make it out. The theme for the night is Sex Machine apparently, so I hope that means we are getting funky.

Durkin Live @ Goodlife

If there was ever a person who was overdue for a Live At Home it's Ryan Durkin. Can't blame the man since he's been super busy working with Black El on their recent self release as well as some new Banana Seat tracks (stay tuned for the later). Durk and Black El recently curated a night at the Good Life where they did a few live numbers and played some good rap jams and Durk recorded his DJ set. I like how he plays old and new and weird stuff but doesn't go too far out in any one direction and keeps a tight set. A great listen if you're just not ready to get on this Kanye bandwagon. From Durkin himself (Soundcloud link below):

DJ set recorded 100% LIVE at Good Life in Boston, MA. I was playing upstairs during the BASSIC dubstep party, so I went kinda left field and decided to play a bunch of new music that is influencing me these days. New school raps, wonky instrumentals, future beats and a little boom bap. Cheers.

Acid Yazz

I haven't made a mixtape in forever. So here's a mixtape I made in the wee hours of the morning between working on all the slew of stuff that's about to hit the fan. I put it together from some of the finer moments in my Serato and record ripping history. Threw in remixes and production from some of the FF fam. It ended up being super long so I broke it up into pieces and made a website for it where you can stream it in sections, or download it all via this virtual trading post.

Use this modern day barter system to download it to your Zune or iZod:

Live at Home 31: Bennett4Senate

Bennett4Senate - Live at Home pt 31

I know this mix series is supposed to be "things I can't play live," but mine ended up being kind of backwards. I've been doing my show on WFMU for the past six months or so, where freeform is the norm, so the weirder the better, and I've barely stepped into a club in that time. I think everything on here I've played on the show, but when I'm in there I'm not beat matching or anything, so my Sunday afternoon vibe is actually a chance to dust off the Serato and try to get a more proper continuous mix going.

I'm pleased with how this came out, its a lot like what I'm aiming for with my show, but pared down for more focused consumption. Both beat-heavy sections and synth pad scenic atmospheres, a mix of old records and new WAV files (lossless son!). Sounds like lots of synths of course, library music, vocoder Neil Young, acid techno ragas, a couple soundtrack cuts, 90s Lion King feel good vibe house, ambient album cuts from disco LPs, a splash of r&b... also a bunch of new material, which has been the refreshing surprise of being on a radio station that gets tons of new independent music every week. The record industry may be a big ? right now but contemporary music is still inspiring. So this mix has some new Detroit house, "chillwave," even some autotune.

Thanks for letting me be a part of this. I've really enjoyed listening to the rest of the Live at Home series, y'all are deep!!

- Bennett4Senate
Photo above form Bennett's flickr. See more of his art at bennettwilliamson.com and hear him on WFMU Thursdays from 3 to 6 am plus out in the Brooklyn area. On a personal note Bennett has been a big influence on me from both his radio playlists and trading mpfrees on thumb drives. Thanks for this mix dude!

Nickel Snacks & Paper Stacks

Mr. AOK checks in from Brooklyn (by way of Brookline) with his newest mixtape for Famous Class. Chock full of edits with dope artwork from Sober. Here's the breakdown from Marko:
I made Nickel Snacks & Paper Stacks as part of my ongoing mix series with brooklyn DIY label Famous Class Records. It consists of 12 tracks, 10 of them are brand new original edits. I guess part of the reason I did it this way was to force myself back into more production. But I also wanted to share some of my favorite rap songs and artists with kids that wouldn't normally give them a chance because of the production / scene / whatever. It sounds like strawberry lemonade 4Loko and a Backwood full of hi grade in the back of a show early on in the night. It plays a little like an EP but with tempo mixing and it has the best rap tunes that i've been listening to mixed with the best other tunes I've been hearing. You can't go wrong.

Dj 7L - Music To Be Murdered By

Earlier this month we posted 7L's amazingly great yacht/smooth/AM rock mix, Step Into The AM. If you are enjoying this amazing East Coast Fall as much as I am, you should definitely grab that mix. Put it in the pod pod and take a ferry across the water to make it that much more special.

Now our Bladerunner main man has taken the Halloween mix into the next level. With all respect to our very own Darko, this mix is my new favorite "holiday" mix.

7L mixed a grip of horror movie scores and film samples together for your listening pleasure. This is definitely good for handing out candy to kids and maybe the goth that got into Hip Hop via Necro and Non-Phixion (this mix contains none of these artists, thank god).

Added Bonus: Mike 2600 on the design tip for this.

So without further ado, I bid you MUSIC TO BE MURDERED BY!!!!

Speaker Project Relaxation Mix

A few years ago my Boston roommate for life Benny and I participated in Juan Angel Chavez's speaker project at Mass Art. Chavez's giant "speakers" turned gallery into a bunch of makeshift accoustic spaces and chillout rooms using scrap wood and metal found on the streets of Boston and local artists were invited to perform daily. Benny and I both did solo sets but we also wanted to collab on a DJ set in the space. We were really into the New Age records and tapes that kept turning up at the local second hand so decided to do a proper New Age mix. Dug up the recording the other day and have been relaxing hard to it. We did this mix using vinyl, Serato, tapes at variable speeds, and some basic effects in Max/MSP. This is a direct recording so you won't hear what it sounded like from inside the giant speaker but the resonance of the wood and metal was supposed to make it all the more interesting. Hope you enjoy it in your own acoustic environment. Partial track list in the comments below (tapes may be hard to track down).
For more on Ben check out his distro and this interview he did with Rare Frequency last year.

Check out this globe article for more on the speaker project and photos at the Speaker Project website.

Club Music Dj Tools

I was going through records last week getting ready for a night I was doing with Scottie B. I wanted to play some old Club songs and do some mixing like I used to hear on the radio in Baltimore in the 90's. I quickly found that most all of my old weird club records are scratched to shit, so I started recording them into the ol' DAW . Then I started fucking around and doing some quick, choppy editing. Here's one of them:

Clubshorts record Blend #1

sideeyenote: I did the jungle brothers a capella live in the club, but i figured i would edit it in because it seems like a handy DJ tool. If anyone wants the track without it leave a message after the beep.

Maximum Balloon feat David Byrne - Apartment Wrestling (prince klassen edit)

This was posted last week without a DL link. I let the Djs have a week to play with it, now I can release it for everyone else to bump!

This tune is off of David Sitek's Maximum Balloon side project. Sitek being from TV on The Radio enlisted band members as well as a whose who of indie pop stars for guest spots. Apartment Wrestling features David Byrne and I must say it sounds way more Byrne than it does Sitek.

Can You Moombahton

There may be detractors of the Moombah hype (looking at you Ryan Durkin) but Klassen has made me a believer. Hearing him chop up Moombahton with cumbia and reggaeton breaks made me want to finish this moombah edit I started a while ago. This Mr. Fingers OG clocks in at around mooba bpm so I thought I'd add some hton to it. Henjoy.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PASE ROCK

I KNOW DUDE THAT KNOWS DUDE.

Dj 7L - Step Into The Am

One of the nicest DJs I know sent over his new mixes last week, but with the move taking place I am just now getting to them.

Dj 7L of 7L & Esoteric & more currently of The Bladerunners is a solid DJ, good dude, and has a record collection to die for. As many of us are familiar with the stream of Yacht rock that can be heard on the AM dial, 7 went ahead and channeled his inner Michael Mcdonald and put together this great mix of just that. Solid gold blue eyed/ captain’s hat soul!

The homie OZ from Canvas took care of the design side of the project. The very special + limited Step Into The AM pack can be purchased exclusively at Uncle Pete’s in Boston which includes the mix cd, a print, + t shirt. 7L went all out on this and the mix is just ridiculously good without a hint of irony.

You can, however, download the mix for free (if you are one of those people).

To download the mix, you must learn.

Poised and ready to pounce like a cheetah Black El + Durkin are leaking a slow drip of content before they rip your face off on August 31st with El's new album "Color Commentary." It started with leaks not featured on the full length but today brings the first of the album cuts to float around the internet "Hi(GH)". I cut together the above video for one of em and played some instruments on a few songs. Grab Milf and Cookies, Rush, and Clockwise from Black El or Durk's blogues. See if you can pick out the ghost keys.

Tonight/tomorrow morning I'll be appearing alongside good old Bennett4$enate on his summer WFMU slot Awesome New Place. Excited to kick it radio style again in good company and on the station I grew up listening to. I'll play plenty of weird records, some Fully Fitted exclusives, and maybe some video chops sans video for your imagination to run wild. We'll be talking about video on the radio in prep for this:

On Thursday night Bennett and I will tag team a DJ set complete with not yet viral videos from the internet at the Everything is Terrible after party at Public Assembly. Stop by for the show and stay for the jams.

Then it's up to Boston for a few nights. Hope to see you somewhere between.

Gonzo's Baltimoreux

"For cookout time...make it Live at home # 29 time"

Great man, and no stranger to a great cookout, (wether its at his house or the family Devlin's) Adam Gonzo brings the dog-day delivery with his Live at Home.

Hey Guys,
This mix is all about peaks and valleys, strikes and gutters. Because, you know, sometimes you eat the bar, and, well, sometimes it eats you. I tried to put a little bit of something for everyone in this one-- 80's divorce rock, dream pop, cosmic disco, and, of course, Michael Jackson. I wanted to give this a summertime vibe, perfect for BBQs and trips to the beach. I hope the kids dig it. Anyway, I am super honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the fully fitted live at home mix series; the roster of DJs who have contributed so far is amazing.

I am currently working on my dissertation for a PhD in political theory at Johns Hopkins University. The dissertation is (tentatively) titled Race and Vision: Rethinking the Tragic, and it engages a number of intellectual traditions and thinkers, including Sophocles, Nietzsche, Frantz Fanon, Cornel West, C. L. R. James, Immanuel Kant, Johann Herder, Gilles Deleuze, W. E. B. Du Bois, and some other folks as well. I am also teaching an undergrad seminar in the fall titled "Black Political Thought and the Enlightenment" that I am really excited about. Hopefully one day I can change my DJ name to 'Dr. Adam Gonzo'.

All the best from balmy Baltimore,
Adam Gonzo

RIP Tuli Kupferberg

Staying in the psych vain wanted to pay tribute to Tuli Kupferberg a true Bohemian and Fug till the end. From The Fugs website:

The oi is oi-ing in the Great Oi!

This fugs tune always stuck in my mind, maybe cuz of the Timothy Leary cameo, or maybe cuz it's one of the more melodic Fugs tunes. Have the full length floating around at my folks house somewhere but here's the only copy I could find on the nets for now:

Turn on, tune in, drop out

Hocus Pocus

Congrats Spain. World cup had a lot of funny memes and moments attached. Thought it was pretty cool this Focus song got a lot of burn due to the much talked about Nike ad. Looks like some members of Focus are still at it and enjoying some time on the (European) charts again. Wonder if Thijs can still hit the high notes.

Church Sale Record Digs

This past holiday weekend I went back to the place I started buying weird records as a kid. This massive church sale in my home town is pretty much endless piles of clothes, records, electronics, and housewares packed into the the bottom floors of the local Methodist. Record piles have been slimming out in favor of VHS tapes and CD's over the years but still managed to grab a few choice pieces.

Religious music and sermon test pressings:

Useful 12"s and flute prog:

Ethnic music and filmstrip soundtracks:

All in all a good trip. And of course a chance to hear Sir Anthony:

sir anthony

Sir Anthony runs the music sales. He keeps a close eye on the classical section and performs a program of material from the stacks. He's an odd guys, sometimes speaks with a transelvania accent, but his tenor game in on point. Wouldn't be summer in a stuffy church basement without him. Merry Christmas in July everyone:

Sir Anthony by Ghostdad

I'll be putting in a guest spot over at WFMU with Bennett next week so stay tuned to hear some of the above cuts and then some.
